Nancy Gray Obituary
Nancy Ann Jones Gray, 88, of Oberlin, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021. She was born March 24, 1933, in Ravenna, Ohio, to Leroy and Edna Jones. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mt. Union College (now the University of Mt. Union) in 1954. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Ted Gray, she moved to Rochester, New York, where Ted attended medical school. Upon graduation, they moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, and then to Oberlin in 1964. Nancy had many interests, including music, knitting, sewing, and theater. She loved to travel and fell in love with the several countries of Africa that she visited. Her last major trip was a river cruise on the Danube in 2018 with her daughters, a special dream of hers. But Nancy will be best remembered as a volunteer extraordinaire. She gave generously of her time to several organizations, such as the Girl Scouts, First Methodist Church, the Oberlin Heritage Center, and Oberlin College. She was especially passionate about Oberlin Community Services and Allen Hospital. In 2017, she received an award from Allen Hospital for 50 years of volunteer activity ranging from running the candy striper program to sitting on the ethics committee to manning the cash register in the gift shop. In 2019, OCS dedicated a bench to her to honor her years of service for them. Nancy is survived by daughters, Janet Leslie (Dominique) Michal, Cathleen Dawn (Kirk) Bierman and Cynthia Allison (Dan) Dickerson; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Ted in 2003; older sister, Margaret and her parents. A virtual celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. EST.
