Paul B. Oncley, a resident of Kendal at Oberlin, died Oct. 2, 2011.He recently celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.Paul was born June 22, 1911 to Lawrence and Arena Oncley in Chicago, IL and grew up in Fayette, IA and Winfield, KS. He studied music at Southwestern College, the Eastman School, and Juilliard Graduate School. He performed extensively on radio and stage including viola with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, singing with the Ionian Quartet in performances at the Metropolitan Opera House and a command performance at the White House for President Franklin Roosevelt. He became part of the Music faculty at the University of North Carolina.During World War II, Paul did acoustic research at Duke University and later at Bell Laboratories. He received a Ph.D. in Engineering from Columbia University in 1953. From 1958-1978, he worked for the Boeing Company and later Man, Acoustics, and Noise. In 1994, he moved to Oberlin, OH where he remained active in musical and research activities.Paul is survived by a daughter Carol Sedgwick (husband Stephen); daughter-in-law Katharina Possler; grandchildren Steven (wife Nancy), Nathan Irwin and Kathryn Sedgwick and great grandchildren Douglas and Alexander Oncley.He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Alma M. Oncley (nee Lissow) in 2003.A memorial service will be Saturday, 2:00 p.m. October 22, 2011 at First Church in Oberlin, Main and Lorain Streets, Oberlin.
