With much sadness the Family of Philip E. Hahn Sr. of Elyria announces his passing Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Phil was born May 22, 1929 in Elyria, Ohio, the son of Harvey E. and Martha (nee Hansen) Hahn. He was a 1949 graduate of Elyria High School and was an outstanding athlete, lettering in football, track and baseball. He made the game winning tackle in his sophomore year that led to Elyria High’s first undefeated football season (1947). Upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, becoming a Weapons Specialist. At the outbreak of the Korean War, Phil was part of the famous Inchon Landing in Korea, fought in the retaking of Seoul, South Korea and fought in the heroic battle at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea, earning a Bronze Star with a “V” for Valor and five Battle Stars, plus the Purple Heart for wounds received during one of those battles at Hagaru Ri, North Korea. Phil was also presented with two Presidential Unit Citations, United Nations Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with five battle stars. Phil was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Elyria met Catherine and they married. He joined The Elyria Fire Department and retired after 25 years. After retiring, he volunteered at the Lorain County Veterans Services and transported Veterans to the two Veterans Hospitals in Northern Ohio, logging in over 6000 hours of service before officially retiring to enjoy life and his family. He was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor in 2020, is on the Roll of Honor at the National Purple Heart Museum and is a member of the Chosin Few Assoc., Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (donor), Marine Corps League, Military Order of The Purple Heart (Founder and past President of the Ohio Chapter), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Korean War Veterans Assoc., 1st/2nd Division Marine Corps Assoc., Life member VFW 1079, American Legion Post 12, Amvets Post 32, Life member Elyria Elks 465 and was Ohio Elk of the year in 1997. Phil also drove his Red Hummer in many Memorial Day Parades in Elyria, something he really enjoyed each year. Phil was also inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 1947 Elyria High Football Team, for having its first undefeated football season in Elyria High School history. Phil is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Catherine (nee McDermott); children; Philip (Debbie) of Dublin, Jeffrey (Pam) of Elyria, Cheryl (Randy) Shultzaberger of Elyria, and Christine (Steve) Thompson of LaGrange, Oh; grand-children, Susan (Josh) Croston, Randall M. (Mandy) Shultzaberger, Joesph (Corin) Hahn, Karen Hahn, Ashley (Vanderbilt) Edwards and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brothers, Harvey and Hal. Friends will be received Tuesday, July 19, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 10:30 am in the funeral home with Reverend Christine Vanderbilt officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio with Full Military Honors. Phil’s family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of the Western Reserve for their kind and compassionate care.
