Phillip James Cox, 43 of Elyria, went home Thursday June 23, 2022 be with his Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness. He was born September 8, 1978 in Elyria Ohio to Leona and James Cox Jr. Phillip spent most of his childhood years in Elyria Ohio, and in 1991 his family moved to Oberlin Ohio. He spent time living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in China, and in Thailand and returned back to his birth town of Elyria, Ohio. Phillip was very passionate about sports. He loved the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, the Ohio State Buckeyes and most of all his Cleveland Browns. He loved the Cleveland Browns since he was a very young man. No matter how good or bad they were at any time he was a true fan all the time. Phillip began his love of sports at a very young age. He began playing little league baseball for Elyria Little League East and from there he decided to continue in the sport by being an Umpire for the Elyria Little League baseball fields for many years, along with other fields in Lorain County. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends watching whatever sporting event was on. Phillip graduated in 1996 from the Lorain County JVS (Oberlin High School) where his studies were in Computers & Accounting. He then went on to study Business Administration & Business Management at Lorain County Community College from 2008-2011 receiving an Associate’s Degree. From 2011-2013 he Studied Computer Based Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in IT from SNHU in 2015. In 2016 he decided to take a different path and became an English Teacher in China teaching American English. Although he loved what he did he had to return back to the USA for health reasons. In 2018 he went on to teaching American English in Bangkok, Thailand, and when his tenure was over he returned back to his home in Elyria, Ohio. He made many new friends while teaching and talked about them fondly, and he loved teaching his students. Phillip is survived by his father, James C Cox Jr. of Oberlin; sisters, Yvonne (Jason) Bunting of Elyria, Amelia (Matthew) Patterson of Avon Lake, and Beth (Dustin) Trask of Princeton North Carolina; paternal grandmother Madelyn Cox; nephews, Christopher (Jennifer) O’Hara, Jonathan (Rebekah Rose) O’Hara, Jeremy (Marissa) Bunting and Aaron Trask; nieces Julia Bunting, Courtney Trask and Megan Trask; four great nephews, Zane, Adam, Tristan and Finley; many aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family Christine (Jeremy) Ansel. Phillip is preceded in death by his mother Leona Cox in 2017; maternal grandmother Elnora Emerson and paternal Grandfather James C Cox Sr. Friends will be received Thursday June 30, 2022 from 5-7 PM at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. Services will be Friday July 1, 2022 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 11400 LaGrange Rd, Elyria. Pastor Burman will officiate.
