Polly Maier Obituary
Polly Boyd Maier, 95, of Elyria, passed from her earthly labors December 12, 2019. Her labors were many and varied and always carried out with love. She was born Christmas Day 1923 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and lived on a sugar plantation on that island paradise until traveling to Howard Seminary for high school in West Bridgewater, MA. She graduated from Temple University School of Horticulture at the beginning of WWII. After graduating, she was employed by Burpee Seed Co. to develop better food crops for the war effort. After the war, Polly and her husband, Dan Boyd, made their home in Elyria and raised their four children all graduating from EHS. She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church in Elyria, Fourthurs at the YWCA, was past President of Elyria Church Women United and Lorain County Church Women United. She was active in Brownies, Jr. Girl Scouts, and Girl Scouts and was a volunteer at Elyria Memorial Hospital. With an interest in her family history, she joined the D.A.R in 1998 and was a member of the Nathan Perry Chapter. Polly lives in the memory of her children, Bill Boyd of Fredericksburg,VA, Michael Boyd of Florissant, MO, Charley Boyd of Batavia, NY, and Susan Boyd Irwin of Mt. Joy, PA; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Daniel Boyd and Forest Maier; parents, Arthur and Marion Foss; and a brother, Robert Foss. Friends will be received Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 3:00 pm until the time of a 4:00 pm memorial service in the chapel of Wesleyan Village, 807 West Avenue, Elyria. Reverend Nathan Russell will officiate. Interment will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, OH In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Washington Avenue Christian Church, 301 Washington Avenue, Elyria, OH 44035 or the Salvation Army, 716 Broad Street, Elyria, OH 44035.
