Richard M. “Mike” Hooper, Sr., 73, of Elyria, died September 17, 2020. He was born November 9, 1946 in Sylva, NC. He served in the US Army in the 1960’s and the US Navy in the 1980’s. In the 1960's, Mike was in the Job Corp in San Marcus, TX and later performed magic at that center. He was known as “Michael the Magician” and during the 70’s, 80’s, and into the 90’s entertained at various events. He studied how to operate heavy equipment and retired as an over the road truck driver. During his time at Fastway Trucking in North Ridgeville, they held a truck rodeo, which he won and they put "#1 Driver" on the side of his truck. Mike was a member of Elyria AMVETS 32, VFW Post 1079 and an assistant Boy Scout leader. He was a collector of Roy Rogers memorabilia that earned him the nickname “Roy”. On his 40th birthday, Mike had his picture taken with Roy and said it was the highlight of his life. Mike is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet S. (nee Hartle); a son; and his dog, Toby. He was preceded in death by his parents, Weston H. and Alice I. (nee Dillard) Hooper; twin brother, Roger M; and a sister, Kathy Brewer. A graveside service will be Friday, October 2, 2020 at 11:00 am at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township with Minister Amy Gilbert officiating. Elyria VFW Post 1079 Honor Guard will present military honors.
