Robert "Ted" Hopkins' Obituary
Robert Hopkins Obituary
Robert "Ted" Hopkins, 88, of Wellington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2022. He is home with his Lord and Savior. Born in Elyria, to Mary and Theodore Hopkins, Ted was the fourth child joining sisters, Doris (Malcolm) Sperry, Ruth (Warren) Byars and Velma (Tim) Grambley. They were a tight-knit group and were raised to value education, not take for granted what they had, and to work hard for what they wanted. Ted was an analytical thinker and learned many skills working alongside his father. Together, they tackled mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing and masonry projects, helping build or remodel many family homes. Ted added welding and fabrication, and auto body repair to his skill set while serving with the U.S. Army in Korea during the War. He re-built many cars, trucks and motors throughout his lifetime, and passed his skills on to his sons. Ted also obtained his Class 3 Operators License in Waste Water Treatment and worked for the City of North Olmsted for several years. He was the owner and operator of H & S Electric until his retirement at the age of 62. Ted enjoyed time with family, especially during the holidays. He liked camping trips, being outdoors, bird watching, visiting with the guys at McDonalds, and helping his children out on a house project. He was active in the Ohio State Tractor Pullers Assoc. and competed in the Modified Four-Wheel Drive Truck Class with the "Half Century", a 1950 Dodge Power Wagon, which son, Phil is currently transforming into a hot rod. He married Hazel, the beautiful red head that caught his eye in 1957. He was a dedicated husband and father. Together, they raised four children, Phil (Marcy) Hopkins, Lucy Goldsmith - Velez, Linda Hopkins and Paul Hopkins; and were blessed with four grandchildren, Josh (Kristin Eger) Hopkins, Jon Hopkins, Cierra Goldsmith and Mckenzie (Alex Dressler) Goldsmith; as well as two great-grandchildren, Devin Hopkins and Joslynn Hopkins. In addition to his wife, parents, siblings and their spouses, Ted was preceded in death by his stillborn son, Edward Hopkins; granddaughter, Kyrsten Goldsmith; son-in-law, Michael Velez. Dad, thank you for camping trips, custom made bikes and water balloon fights. For Boxer, Toby and the many pets, and rescuing Rascal without a sweat. For musical instruments and Paul's baseball games, to challenging us at pool or a pinball game. For your cunning pranks and jokes, and the shotgun hoax! For hands-on training transforming motors, cars and trucks, including the Half Century pulling truck. For life's lessons taught, hard and not. For teaching us to think and try, and to question why. For bedtime prayers, all the moments shared, love and care. We love you. Ted's wishes were to be cremated. A private service is being planned.
