Ross Newell Obituary
Ross G. Newell, 95, died May 4, 2016 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Ashland, OH. He was born August 3, 1920 in Elyria and was a 1938 graduate of Elyria High School. He had been a resident of Oberlin and Amherst before moving to Westerville, OH in 1993, returning to Amherst in 2009. During WWII Ross served in the US Army as a staff sergeant in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and the Philippians. He was a forward observation operator, piloted a light plane and participated in battles in New Guinea and Luzon. For thirty three years he was employed by Lorain County Bank as buildings superintendent, retiring in 1985. He then continued to work part time at Sears Midway Mall. Ross is a member of Elyria Lodge # 787 F & AM and a Past Master of Frank S. Harmon Lodge # 663 F & AM. He was also a member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland and Amherst VFW # 1662.Ross is survived by daughters, Judy (Kenneth) Toth of Delaware, OH, Barbara Jo Brackett of West Melbourne, FL and Kandie (Robert) Giancaterino of Amherst, OH; son, Roger Newell of Worthington, OH; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson.He was preceded n death by his wife of sixty years, Emma M. in 2006; parents, William and Amelia Newell; brothers, William, Dwayne and Byron Newell; sisters, Mildred Childres, Violet Swope and Florence Brunner and a son-in-law, Harold Brackett.Friends will be received Sunday May 8, 2016 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A private service will be Monday May 9, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where Elyria VFW # 1079 will present military honors.
