Russell “Doug” Schmittgen, 72, of Elyria, died October 27, 2022 in his home. He was born December 19, 1949 in Elyria and was a graduate of Devereux School in King of Prussia, PA. Doug was employed for forty five years at Wesleyan Village, Elyria, retiring in 2013 and was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elyria. Doug was a supporter of Elyria High School Sports and was a member of the Elyria High School football chain crew beginning in the 1980’s and working into the 2017 season. He continued to attend all home football games until this past season. In 2008 Doug was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding service and dedication to Elyria sports for all the years running up and down the sidelines. He was a fan of the Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavs and would watch and listen to all their games. He enjoyed traveling and attending The Lorain County Fair where he displayed his collectibles. Spending time with his family, especially the holidays was important to Doug and was known for playing Santa Claus. In his younger years Doug enjoyed fishing and bowling with friends. Doug is survived by his sister, Lynn Newell (nee Schmittgen) of Elyria; brother-in-law, Len Hopper of Larkspur, CO; nephew, Patrick (Sherry) Newell of North Ridgeville; nieces, Ann (Rich) Hamker of Oberlin, Stacy (Peter) Carroll of Bethel, WA and Stephanie Hopper of Denver, CO; great nephews, Kale Hamker and Jacob Carroll; great nieces, Cassadi Newell and Madilyn Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Ann Schmittgen; sister, Nancy Hopper; nephew, Jay Newell and brother-in-law, Tom Newell. Friends will be received Thursday November 3, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A funeral service will be Friday November 4, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Reverend Kathryn Ketchum officiating. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
