Russell L. SmithRussell L. Smith, 82, of Elyria, died September 28, 2017. He was born July 18, 1935 in Lakewood, Ohio and from 1954-1957 he served as a Sergeant in The US Army. Russell was employed as a welder at York International from 1968 until retiring in 2001. He was a member of United Steelworkers of America Local # 6985. He had served as committeeman and treasurer and also served on the grievance committee. He attended First Baptist Church, Elyria and enjoyed woodworking, working in his garden and was a fan of all sports. Russell is survived by his wife of thirty six years, Dorothy Edna “Sally” (nee: True); daughters, Joy (Larry) Degley of Elyria and Jennifer (Dan) Loy of Fairview Park; grandchildren, Nikki, Nathan and Danny; step-sons, John, Dan and Tim Chambers; sister, Jean Gawlik of Elyria; brothers, Harold Smith of Elyria, Richard (Lois) Smith of South Amherst and Dennis (Sue) Smith of Vermilion.He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Smith; brother, Marvin Smith and a step-daughter, Chris Loach.Friends will be received Tuesday October 3, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria, Ohio. A funeral service will be Wednesday October 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Pastor Craig Golden will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 11400 LaGrange Road, 44035.
