Ruth E. Hales (nee Kearney), 76, of Elyria, died July 26, 2023 at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born September 15, 1946 in Cleveland and was a 1964 graduate of Elyria High School. Ruth graduated from beauty school, worked as a beautician and then was employed as a secretary at Oberlin Clinic and University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. She was a lover of dogs. Ruth is survived by her husband of 28 years, Terry; son, Robert (Judy) Nieding of Grafton; daughter, Deidre Kearney of Cleveland; step-daughters, Shelley (Scott) Smolka of Avon Lake and Christine (Jeremy) Ansell of Malon, WI; grandchildren, Amanda (Johnny) Stewart, Taylor and Garrett Nieding, Stephanie (Adam) Rodriquez, Matt and Heather Blackburn and James Dongarra; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Logan, Emily and Aubrey and a brother, Terry (Sharon) Kearney of KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, Julia and David Kearney and a brother, David Kearney. Memorial contributions may be made to Friendship Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035 or a dog shelter of donor’s choice.
