Stephen Brattoli Obituary
Stephen F. Brattoli, Sr., 95, of Elyria, went to his lord surrounded by his family and with the loving support of Crossroads Hospice August 8, 2013 at Elms Retirement Village in Wellington, Ohio. He was born July 17, 1918 in New Lexington, Ohio the second eldest child of Michael and Lucy Brattoli and grew up during the depression years with his ten siblings. Steve graduated from New Lexington High School in 1936 and earned three letters in football. After graduation Steve worked at Ludowici Celadon Tile in New Lexington. During World War II he was drafted into the US Army in 1942, where he served as a medical technician 4th grade. He served in the European Theater and saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno and the Northern Apennines Po Valley. He served under the 403rd AAA Battalion, the 35th Infantry Division, the 88th Blue Devils Division and the I-Armored Corp of the 7th Army Division. During the European Theater campaign Steve earned the Good Conduct Medal, The European Middle Eastern Service Medal and 5 Bronze Stars. Steve was honorably discharged in 1945.After World War II Steve moved to Elyria and worked for the Bricklayers Local # 34 until retiring in 1996. He was a member of St. Mary Church, Elyria, Elyria VFW # 1079 and was a former coach in Little League East. He enjoyed watching the sports activities of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, vegetable gardening and roller skating. He was a fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Steve is survived by his wife of forty- eight years, Sally A. (nee: Schoditsch); son, Stephen (Koreen) Brattoli of Amherst; step-sons; Michael (Lisa) Bruce and Randy (Mary) Bruce both of Elyria; step-daughters, Susan Pendergrass of Phoenix, AZ and Becky Offenberg of Elyria; grandchildren, Angie (Mic) Fairbanks, Greg Pendergrass, Matt (Cindy) Pendergrass, Jennifer Shough, Joe (Amy) Shough, Josh Offenberg and Madison, Chloe and Aidan Bratttoli; step-grandchildren, Katie Mizen and Jennifer and Jessica Vietzen; great-grandchildren, Zach DeMarco, Kyle Fairbanks, Darrin Davis, Austin, Brayden and Spencer Shough, Bruce Duelly and Mia Pendergrass; brothers, Anthony of Wellington, John of Elyria, Eugene of North Ridgeville and Martin of North Hills, CA; sisters, Clara Bishop of Thornville, Ohio, Mary Naymik of Lorain and Theresa Hardy of North Ridgeville.He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Eileen Bruce in 1966; brothers, Daniel and Joseph and a sister, Anna Barry.Friends will be received Sunday August 11, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A funeral mass will be Monday August 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Avenue, Elyria. Reverend Charles T. Diedrick will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where Elyria VFW # 1079 will conduct military services. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice, 9775 Rockside Road, Suite 270 Valley View, Ohio, 44125.
