Thomas Newell Obituary
Thomas I. Newell, 73, of Elyria, died January 3, 2017. He was born November 9, 1943 in Fairview, OH and attended schools in Elyria and LaGrange, was a 1961 graduate of Elyria High School and also attended Kent State University. As a young man, he was an active member of 4-H Club and the LaGrange FFA, as well as a member of the Travelers Hot Rod Club while he worked as a soda jerk at Hess & Hess Pharmacy. He was then employed at Johnson Furnace Company in Cleveland and Bellevue and Alsport, Inc. Tom was a lifelong farmer in Carlisle Township and worked for over 50 years as an auctioneer, realtor, appraiser, antiques collector and dealer. Tom and his family also built and operated the former Tin Roof Restaurant in Elyria. For over a half century, Tom was an enthusiastic volunteer auctioneer for the Lorain County Jr. Fair Livestock Auctions and Sr. Fair Baked Goods auctions. Tom spent many summers coaching at Little League South and treating countless kids to ice cream at Tin Roof after a game. He was a member of Elyria Elks Lodge #465; LaGrange Hunt Club; LaGrange Engine Club; Lorain County Vintage Motor Scooter Club; social member of Elyria United Polish Club and a former Rotarian. He enjoyed hosting antique appraisal events, was a lifelong outdoorsman, loved riding his Cushman, traveled extensively and was an avid card player. Tom enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and friends, and was known for his sense of humor and forever being a prankster. Tom is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lynn (nee Schmittgen); son Patrick (Sherry) Newell; daughter Ann (Richard) Hamker; grandchildren, Cassadi Newell and Kale Hamker. He was preceded in death by a son, Jay in 1979 and parents Clifford and Estelle Newell. Friends will be received Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A service will be Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Father Charles T. Diedrick officiating. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s name to the LaGrange Engine Club, P.O.
