Urias Meadows Obituary
Urias Meadows, 94, of Elyria, died December 9, 2019. He was born July 25, 1925 in Huntington, WV and had been an Elyria resident since 1964. Urias graduated from Ohio School for the Deaf, Columbus, Ohio in 1945 and attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. He was employed for 27 years by the Elyria City Schools in the maintenance department. He retired in 1991 as Parts Buyer and Inventory Control Clerk from the Bus Garage. Urias was a 30 year member of the Izaak Walton League of America and received national awards, one of which was Membership Officer of the Year while a member of the local Lorain County Ely Chapter. He founded the Black River Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. He was instrumental in establishing a living memorial forest program with the Black River Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and the Lorain County Metropolitan Park District which won a National Arbor Day Foundation Award. He spearheaded the first “Cleanup Elyria Day” in 1982 with a grant from the Litter Control Office of the Division of Natural Resources. He also worked with the county using a similar grant to provide over 25,000 book covers for students in all public and private elementary schools in Lorain County. Urias received an Ohio Conservation Achievement Award from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in 1990 and served on the Lorain County Solid Waste Technical Advisory Committee for Recycling. He also worked on establishing a deaf and blind retirement and healthcare facility for the physically challenged and served as secretary/treasurer. Urias is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathleen M. (nee Dobelbower) and a son, Leroy T. (Rosezina) Meadows of Elyria. He is preceded in death by his parents, Urias and Nancy Meadows; brothers, David, Clayton, Harold, John, Jeral, and Hobart Meadows; and sisters, Florence, Eathel, and Neva. Friends will be received Saturday, December 14, 2019 from 10:00 am until the time of an 11:30 am funeral service at Oberlin Calvary Baptist Church, 414 South Main Street, Oberlin, Ohio 44074. Pastor Brian Kenyon will officiate. Burial will be in LaPorte Cemetery, Carlisle Township.
