Wallace Joseph “Wally” Pence, 101, of Avon, passed away October 15, 2021 at Avon Lake Towne Center. He was born August 22, 1920 in Cleveland, the only child of Anton and Viola Pence and grew up in Lakewood, Ohio. In February 1942, he married Virginia Mae Miller and later joined the US Navy. He served in WWII in the Pacific Arena and volunteered for Submarine Service. He also served in Pearl Harbor and Guam. Wally worked at Standard Oil Co. and then Machine Tool Systems until he retired. He and Virginia visited 48 of the 50 states and attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Elyria, Ohio. He was an avid photographer, loved swimming and fishing.Wally is survived by children, Judith Mae Pence Ludwig of Norfolk CT, James Wallace Pence of Waynesboro VA, and Janet Kay Pence Eby of Avon OH; 5 grandchildren; and 9 great- grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, of 71 years in 2013. Services will be held in the spring at Zion Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, VA, where his ashes will be interred with his Virginia. Their son, James, pastor of the church will officiate. Wally was a member of what has been said to be the greatest generation any society has every produced. He epitomized integrity, self-sacrifice, responsibility, a strong work ethic, commitment to marriage and family and a faith in God. Our family gives thanks to God for putting this man in our lives, for all the love we had for him, and for all the love he shared with us. Wally Pence will be dearly missed.
