Walter William Robert Schroeder, 106, of Elyria, died July 17, 2017. He was born March 27, 1911 to Freida and William Schroeder in Elyria, one of eleven children. “Walt” lived in the Elyria-Grafton area most of his life. As a teen, he worked to help support his mother, father and siblings. As an adult he made his living as a precision tool maker working at General Industries, Couch-Uthe, Ohio Screw Products retired from Elyria Manufacturing. During those early years he enjoyed automobiles, flying and was quite practiced at dancing…thanks to the big band era and frequent trips to the Big Barn and Columbia Ballroom. He met his future wife, Alice, while working and was married in 1943. His married years were spent living on Chestnut Street in Grafton next door to Alice’s parents. Mr. Schroeder was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Grafton. In those years Walt enjoyed bowling, fishing and golf. He was known for fishing trips with his brother, Bill onto Lake Erie and to fishing vacations to Stony Lake in Ontario, Canada, with other family members and friends, Walt had many good fish stories to tell and fishing advice to give. After retirement, he was able to spend more time playing golf and continued to “tee off” with many friends until he was in his late eighties. After the death of his wife, Walt enjoyed time living in Winter Haven, Florida, with the friendship there of Ardis Hoover. He returned to Elyria as his final home, wishing to remain there in his last years. There are many wonderful people to thank for their kindness during that time: relatives and friends who visited faithfully and went to monthly Sunday lunches, or played cards and cribbage with him. A special thanks is given to those who work at Nick’s Restaurant where he was always welcomed like an old friend. He was also cared and welcomed for by the staff at The Abbewood Retirement Community where he last resided.Walt is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Heckendorn of Moscow, Idaho and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty one years, Alice (nee: Bladowski) in 1994; sisters, Louella Smith, Alice Peck, Mildred Scholl, Harriet Snyder, Alma Jones and Alberta Carskadden and brothers, Conrad, Richard, William and Ralph.
