William T. Mitchell, of Elyria, passed away peacefully in hisown home, with family by his side, Monday, August 24, 2015,following a long battle with illness. He was born August 28,1947, in Chevrolet, Kentucky.He graduated from London High School in London, Kentuckyand joined the U.S. Navy in 1965. Fol lowing his dischargein 1968, he relocated to Elyria. Bill was hired at theLorain plant of the United States Steel Company in 1969. Hebecame a member of the United Steelworkers Local 1104 andserved the Local in numerous capacities, including the officesof Chairman of the Grievance Committee and RecordingSecretary.In 1994, he was appointed to the USW International Staff inDistrict 28 by then Director Tino Fullemi. He continued onthe In ternational Staff after the recon figuration of the USWDistricts, and became known for his prowess as an advocatefor the Union in arbitration cases. Bill retired in 2006.Bill enjoyed politics, history, reading and was a vocal supporterof organized labor, even in retirement. He also enjoyedplaying golf and spending time with family. He was afrequent contributor to the Chronicle Telegram's "Letter tothe Editor" column.He is survived by his two sons, Joshua and James Mitchell,both of Elyria and his siblings, Danny Mitchell, Etta Jonesand Delilah Roark of Laurel County, Kentucky; his sevennieces and nephews and many others he took into his heartas family.Burial services will be held at Cumberland Memorial Gardensin Lily, Kentucky, Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at 11A.M.
