Earl W. Smith, 84, of Elyria, died May 18, 2015 at his home.He was born October 27, 1930 in Elyria, where he attended Elyria High School.Earl served with the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952 and was stationed in Korea during the Korean Conflict. For nine years, he worked as a police officer with the Elyria Police Department and then in the family floor covering business. From 1974 until retiring in 1997, .he was employed in the maintenance department at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. After retiring, he continued to work part time at the hospital for several years. He was a lifetime member of Elyria AMVETS #32 and Oberlin V.F.W. #6273 and a member of Elyria American Legion #12.Earl is survived by his wife of 61 years, JoAnn (nee Bally); children Jeffrey (Jessie) Smith of Yulee, FL, Becky Remo of Elyria, Cathy Jo (Larry) Plas of Elyria, Richard (Peggy) Smith of New London and William (Laurie) Smith of Mt. Washington, KY; 16 grandchildren and 4 great granddaughters.He was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Leona Smith.Friends will be received Wednesday, May 20, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. at Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A service will be Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. in the funeral home with Reverend Paul E. Jaster officiating. Burial will be Friday, May 22, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, where Elyria AMVETS #32 will present military honors.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O.
