Gerry Blomgren Obituary
Gerry F. Blomgren, 89, passed away Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Stephens Care Center, Kendal at Oberlin. She was born March 4, 1931 in Great Falls, Montana. Her early life was spent in a number of Montana towns, Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1948. She lived for a year in New York City and then for 60 years in Lakewood, Ohio. She has lived at Kendal at Oberlin for the past 5 years. Gerry was a volunteer for causes that she believed in passionately. While raising their children, Kathryn, Gilbert and Elinor, she served as President of the Franklin School PTA, tutor and Girl Scout Leader. She was also a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters and chaired numerous committees – always devoted to improving voter registration, and fair and equal representation for voters. Gerry also served on the Board of Trustees of West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River, including two terms as Vice President. She served on the Unitarian Universalist Ohio Meadville District Board for several terms and as the District Annual Program Fund Representative for the Unitarian Universalist Association, visiting congregations around Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Gerry served for two terms as a Public Member on the Ohio State Counselor, Social Worker and Family Therapist Board from its inception in 1985 until 1991. She was Chair of the Board in 1988 and 1989 and was named Volunteer of the Year by the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers in 1991. Gerry loved to travel and the Blomgren family had many adventures when their children were young. Once the children were grown, Gerry and George traveled the world and went annually to Hawaii, one of her favorite places on earth. She loved theatre, the Cleveland Orchestra and museums around the world. She was a talented baker and a great holiday traditionalist – celebratory decorations and special meals were prepared for every holiday (big or small). Gerry is survived by George, her husband of 64 years; daughters Kathryn Jenish and Elinor Blomgren; son, Gilbert (Aimee) Blomgren; and a granddaughter Alicia Jenish-McCarron (Adrian). A memorial service will be planned for later in the year. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 20401 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River, OH 44116.
