Jack A. Martin, 70, of Elyria passed away unexpectedly July 20, 2017 in his home. He was born May 27, 1947 in Elyria and was a 1965 graduate of Elyria High School. He received a degree as an X-ray technician and was employed at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Jack served two years in the United States Air Force. Upon returning from service he continued his employment at Elyria Memorial Hospital and also worked as an EMT. In 1970 he became a firefighter with the Elyria Fire Department and throughout his thirty one years with the fire department he rose to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief, retiring in 2001. Jack was involved in Boy Scouts of America as a youth and adult where he served in numerous positions at the troop, district and council levels. His scouting awards included the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. He was a founding member of The Over The Hill Gang at Firelands Scout Reservation. He was a member of Elyria American Legion Post 12, Lorain County Historical Society, Friends of The Lorain County Metroparks and First United Methodist Church. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, gardening and landscaping. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.Jack is survived by his wife of forty nine years, Cynthia (nee: Meredith); son, Jay (Charmin) Martin of Sandusky; daughters, Jennifer Martin of Elyria Township, Carrie (Ray) Sweitzer of Elyria and grandchildren, Kenneth and Kelly Martin, Amanda and Joseph Spangenberg and Lauren, Nicholas, Rachel and Henry Sweitzer.He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Hortense Martin.
