James L. Smith's Obituary
James L. Smith, 79, of Elyria, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Mercy New Life Hospice.
Born on February 22, 1947, in Elyria, Jim was a lifelong resident of the community he loved. He graduated from Elyria High School in 1965 before earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Kent State University.
Jim dedicated his professional life to education, retiring after many years as an English, History, and Government teacher at Clearview High School. Throughout his career, he also served as Chess Club and Bowling Club advisor, Assistant Athletic Director, junior high basketball coach, football and track announcer. He later shared his passion for history as an adjunct professor at Lorain County Community College.
Jim's love of history extended far beyond the classroom. He served as Education Coordinator for the Lorain County Historical Society, was a summer recreation leader with Elyria Parks and Recreation, and became a beloved historian of Cascade Park. He was an active member of the Elyria Historical Association and the International Jim Smith Society, a former president of a local Volksmarching enthusiasts' organization, and a contributing member of the Quincy Gillmore Civil War Round Table. Widely respected as an engaging speaker, Jim gave presentations on American history, Ohio history, and the rich history of Lorain County.
Above all, Jim cherished his family. He loved attending his grandchildren's activities and sporting events, spending time with his granddogs, and relaxing on his porch. He enjoyed playing cribbage, cards, and board games, and was always eager to share his knowledge and love of learning with others. Whether telling stories, preserving local history, or encouraging young people, Jim's kindness, wit, generosity, and genuine curiosity touched countless lives. His legacy lives on through the many students he inspired, the history he helped preserve, and the family and friends who loved him dearly.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Shery (Sprague) Smith; sons, Glen (Ali Graham) Smith and Greg (Susan Freeman) Smith; grandchildren, Emily, Jackson, and Joseph; brother, Robert (Barbara Young) Smith; his godchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved polydactyl cats, Poly and Purrl.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ruth (Williams) Smith; his brother, Bill Smith and wife Vivian.
A casual celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Community of Faith UCC, 9715 East River Road, Elyria.
