Robert George Dempsey, 87, of Elyria, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021. He was born November 13, 1934 in Chardon, Ohio, the son of Audley and Carolyn Dempsey. He was a 1953 graduate of Chardon High School and while living in Chardon served as a police officer. Bob moved to Elyria in 1966 and worked for Bill Bakers, Inc. as an appliance technician. He also served as a Lorain County Deputy Sheriff for several years. Since 1974, he and his wife have owned and operated Dempsey’s Appliance Sales & Service in Elyria. Bob was very active in the community and took pride in supporting organizations in which his children were involved. He received the Elyria Schools and Friends Alumni Association’s Distinguished Volunteer Award in 2007 recognizing him for his many years of service to the Elyria City Schools. For over 40 years, Bob was a Boy Scout leader and was privileged to help dozens of scouts achieve the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He also attended BSA Camp Philmont in New Mexico. The Firelands Council of the Boy Scouts of America honored him with the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service. He was a member of LaPorte United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Bob is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Paula Ann (nee Sigmund); children, Larry (Paula) Dempsey of Terre Haute, IN, Debbie (Mike) Warden of Elyria, Bob (Paula) Dempsey of Wakeman, and Greg (Shelly) Dempsey of LaGrange; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and sisters, Joyce Lovering of Lakeland, FL and Betty (Jim) Grimes of Auburndale, FL. The family will receive friends Friday, December 3, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. Friends will also be received Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 1:00 pm until the time of the 2:00 pm funeral service at LaPorte United Methodist Church, 2071 Grafton Road, Elyria. Reverend William Baker will officiate. Burial will follow in New Russia Township Cemetery.
