Dear Peggy and family, I have fond memories of your husband and father from my student years at Marion L. Steele High School when he was principal. I was editor of The Record, the school newspaper, as a senior, and he and I had many interactions as I presented ideas I wished to publish that dealt with community activism in features and/or editorials. He never just gave me a flat "no" but treated me with the respect of listening to my supportive arguments and reading my words (most of the time agreeing with publication). That respect was returned by me and a post-graduation friendship was formed. One especially strong memory started when I was a senior and he somewhat jokingly predicted I'd get married before ever starting a journalism career. The journalism job came first, so I sent him an invitation to my wedding when that approached a few years later, including a note reminding him of his prediction even though he had moved on to the Brunswick schools. He surprised me a few days before the wedding by showing up at the newspaper with a wedding gift and a hug for congratulations on the job and best wishes for the wedding! Thank you for sharing this sweet man with the many students whose lives he helped influence! May your memories and shared love surround you in comfort,.
Peggy and family, So sad to hear of Vern's passing. What a great guy he was. I have fun memories of the old days. I'm sure he and Ed are having a great time in their reunion. RIP Vern. My heart is with you at this sad time.
Peggy & Family - I am very sadden to hear of Vernon's passing. I certainly have some fond memories of Vernon and all his jokes! He certainly will be missed. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
